Classic Car Servicing, Restoration and Sales

1964 Morris Minor 1000 Saloon

A truly honest example with just two owners on the V5

Much has been documented in relation to the Issigonis design that originated with a 1943 prototype (Mosquito). Some two decades later the 1098cc engine was in production and over 1 million ‘Moggies’ had been sold worldwide and the ‘worlds biggest small car’ sold itself according to the ad men at BMC. On 28th October 1964 chassis 1083164 was dispatched to Wray Park Garage in Reigate although the selling Vendor would be Coopers BMC Garages, Barton on Sea; a four door de-luxe saloon finished in Smoke Grey with blue-grey interior trim costing £573 18s 4d. Registration 334 NOR was attached (this was later changed to year specific FPJ 91B) on the 20th November for Mrs E M Davenport of Barton on Sea, Hampshire. The original service book confirms the PDI was carried out the following day with Coopers completing every service up until 1970 with 11746 miles travelled.

Country Classic Cars are thrilled to offer this Morris Minor on a commission sale, a solid example which enjoys a history file with invoices dating back to the early 1970’s, although the more recent expenditure will be listed here. Safety upgrades include heated rear screen, inertia reel seat belts with a front brake disc conversion and from the hundreds of invoices available the most notable are:

Complete engine rebuild 2008 some 50k miles ago

Alternator conversion 2016

Recon gearbox and clutch kit fitted 2017

New front wings 2019

Replacement inner & outer rear wings 2020

Radiator re-core 2022

Engine mount, timing chain, thermostat 2022

We noted a recent battery, fuel pump and we will fit 4 new tyres and supply the next custodian with a year’s MOT.

Over £8k on body and paint in the past 5 years ensuring this ‘Moggie’ presents as well as it drives and on the road it retains those characteristics the Minor is famous for. Gear change is slick whilst the firm clutch bites at half travel, the period suspension may have been refreshed but body roll is compulsory with a design of pensionable age. Minimal play in the steering with plenty of feedback allows for a relaxed and typically period drive and with the disc conversion early braking ‘just in case’ is no longer required. This Minor does everything well, benefitting from upgrades whilst retaining the fun factor.

At Country Classic Cars we prefer to present a ‘warts and all’ detailed write up of any classic we are requested to sell. This helps to avoid ‘buyer’s remorse’ especially for those purchasing from abroad or interested parties travelling distances to view. Even though our ‘Moggie’ is more driver than show car, the exterior presents well with good panel gaps which is not always the norm. The front has enjoyed a fresh hue in recent years and so has the n/s rear leaving the o/s and rear bumper panel to offer a little more age. The chrome is largely original and at 60 years old presents some patina, it is uniform and light and certainly not requiring replacement. Obviously, the underside has received plenty of attention over the decades but our ramp inspection revealed a solid example, any work that has been carried out has been done well. The interior enjoys recent carpets and wrinkle free door cards, whilst the seat covers are older there are no signs of damage or excessive wear. The original roof lining features the odd blemish but will offer many years service whilst the front parcel shelf was re-trimmed in 2020 it still enjoys factory slide out ashtrays. All the gauges operated correctly during the test and the heating system proved excellent on what was a cold and cloudy day.

The mileometer currently shows 57751 miles although history indicates a replacement may well have been fitted around 2010. The V5 shows just 5 previous owners all of which can take great credit ensuring this Minor is still running around the southern counties. The sale will include one of the largest history files we have seen over the years plus original owners and service books, Heritage Certificate and photographs of previous structural repairs.
