1995 R129 Mercedes SL600 Auto
Ultimate in luxury and performance, V12 power, classic Mercedes£19,995
SoldEnthusiasts ‘in the know’ recognise the R129 SL series as the finest modern classics on today’s market, over engineered quality is present throughout and there is little doubt the ultimate within the range was their V12 powered SL600; its mighty six litre M120 powerplant so good Pagani used them in their first Zonda. Offering 394bhp with an earth moving 420ft lbs of torque all transmitted through a seamless auto transmission. New, the SL600 base cost was £98,330 when everyday showroom models enjoyed an average sticker price under £15k. And still they sold in reasonable numbers, understandable when you put your foot down and this fully equipped sports tourer effortlessly hits 60mph in six seconds through to a governed 155mph. Leaving the factory in November 94, this right-hand drive example was first sold via Vardy Mercedes in Cambridge 21/03/1995 and has now traveled 82,003 miles.
Finished in Azurite Blue Metallic with panel fit and finish that is exceptional for a 26 year old classic; just the odd tiny stone chip to the bonnet with AMG rims recently refurbished enjoying fresh quality rubber. Luxury and function describe an interior with full leather seating, heated and powered for every comfort option including head rests. Factory over mats have protected the deep carpets which enjoy the ‘as-new’ appearance whilst the central column veneer is also unblemished. Equipment level is obviously high, cruise control, electric windows, mirrors, immobiliser, central locking etc are to be expected and as spring turns the SL party piece, off with the hard top and enjoy the colour match powered fabric hood. With a nod to its 90s origins this SL still features a period NEC car phone and Panasonic radio cassette player. Safety features include anti-lock brakes, traction control, airbags and emergency roll-over bar that deploys in 0.3 of a second.
On the road this SL represents the quintessential cruiser, offering an effortless ability to cross continents with ease. The exhaust note is far superior to any audio system whilst the gear changes go unnoticed and overall, the drivetrain gives the impression it was assembled last year and not a quarter of a century ago. There is no doubt the R129 reflects an era when Mercedes built cars using the ‘quality first’ method and costs were a secondary consideration, engineering at its peak. Steering is precise, not a hint of play and poor road surfaces pass unnoticed whilst the adaptive damping system allows for enthusiastic cornering; this SL is more gentlemen’s express than hooligans drift car. Built to cosset passengers the cabin is a glorious place to travel and with this era of Mercedes expect every button, dial and control to operate as it should.
A large history file includes MOT details from 2006 at 50k miles (current MOT Nov 21) plus the original dealer pack with owners-manual and service details (main dealer or Mercedes specialist) from new to the 72k which was carried out 13/5/03 at 47,660 miles. A file of invoices that cover repairs and servicing from 2004 to 2018, confirming the milage shown. Between 2014-16 the current owner took the reins and carried out over £5k on mechanical improvements with a Mercedes specialist and the last major service was in 2018, this included a replacement air mass metre and brake pads all round. Visually and behind the wheel the SL600 delivers everything the classic enthusiastic could desire, tour in style, or impress on the show ground. Many consider the R129 a classic from new and there is little doubt their values continue to climb; a luxury sportster that can be enjoyed year-round.
Country Classic Cars carry out a full inspection of all vehicles sold on commission, looking to rectify any known issues prior to sale and it was noted on a recent check over problems that resulted in a complete overhaul of the self-levelling suspension. All four Nitrogen spheres with pump hardlines have been replaced and the system now operates correctly, also a noisy smog pump was swopped out; all parts were supplied by Mercedes direct from Germany.
We are presenting the SL on behalf of the current owner and consider the sale price to be attractive and fair.
