Initially labelled ‘110’ the Land Rover Defender first impressed the public in 1983 with upgrades added throughout the decade, finally enjoying the ‘Defender’ title when introduced as part of the 1990 range. Due to the Rover groups TDi engine inability to achieve Euro 3 emissions specs, an all-new unit was required and the TD5 power plant was first installed within a production Defender chassis in 1998 and was immediately recognised as the perfect complement to the 110 chassis, offering 120bhp@4200rpm and worthy torque figures 221 ft lbs @ 1950 rpm. Whilst the 5-cylinder turbo charged unit may not provide sportscar performance there are few destinations in the world it cannot reach and maintained well the Defender enjoys the Land Rover tradition for longevity.

Country Classic Cars in Midhurst are pleased to offer an ‘on consignment’ sale from the current custodian, a Defender 110 TD5 with the rare and desirable long wheelbase in a three-door configuration. Registered March 2003 with full MOT history to confirm milage travelled at 143,235 with service record stamped up to 111k miles in 2016. Since which this TD5 has been serviced at every MOT with any advisories dealt with as required, the original owner’s handbook and every tax disc have been added to the history file with invoices of work carried out.

Finished in Metallic Green the bonnet and front wing tops have been improved with black chequer plate whilst the front bumper features a durability hoop. Battle damage was noted to the passenger door top, also the driver’s door is suffering from lacquer peel in similar areas, the n/s rear wheel arch has been caught although not deformed with the rear wing offering a line of light scratches. Many would say ‘it’s a Land Rover and these things should be expected’ but we would prefer to point these issues out ‘up front’ and again detailed images of these blemishes are available to view. Sitting tall on Goodrich All-Terrain tyres this Defender has been used both on and off road and our inspection road test found little to fault with the drivetrain or running gear with ample turbo performance complimenting the willing 2495cc five-cylinder. The five-speed gearbox enjoys a slick change with Land Rovers bullet proof high/low ratio diff lock. Certainly, the interior would benefit from some valeting.  The seats are free from damage and offer minimal wear, plastics and trim retain their original shape whilst instruments including clock, temp, fuel and speedo plus electric windows and all operated correctly when tested. A factory radio cassette player is installed with under dash speakers fitted, all very functional as you would expect from a Land Rover.
