The press release at the 2009 Detroit auto show proclaimed, ‘the BMW Z4 Roadster represents the interplay of classical proportions and state-of-the-art technology.’
The E89 version was the first BMW to be designed by women, both in their 30s at the time Nadya Arnaout was charged with the interior whilst Juliane Blasi sculpted the Z4’s exterior lines; it was also the first of the Z-series to feature a retractable hard top.
Powerplants were also fresh with an all-aluminium 2. 0 four-cylinder unit featuring twin turbos driven through six or eight speed automatic with paddle shift option. The stats for this package are impressive offering 184bhp @ 4800rpm and 270nm torque @ just 1250rpm; this equates to 62 in 6. 9 and 142mph top end whilst still returning 41. 5mpg with CO2 output at 159g/ km which is a 42g/ km improvement on the previous model.
At Country Classic Cars we find it’s best to present a ‘warts and all’ detailed write up of any classic we are requested to sell. This helps to avoid ‘buyer’s remorse’ especially for those purchasing from abroad or interested parties travelling distances to view. The exterior Mineral White metallic was an option and stuns in bright sunshine, panels offer perfect lines with correct door gaps. Just a couple of tiny stone chips to the front panel were the only faults of note and they required careful inspection to locate. Small marks to a couple of the multi-spoke alloys conclude any issues with the exterior whilst the interior equipment package labelled ‘design pure balance’ was an option above standard supplied with the Mineral White finish. The quality of materials within the cabin speaks volumes about the attention to detail BMW invested in their ‘mini GT.’ Ample head and shoulder room even for someone of 6ft 3in and comfort levels that allowed for hours behind the wheel, actually we decided the Z4 would certainly offer enough luxury for continental touring. Carpets are new with minimal wear to the factory over mats whilst the Merino brown-black leather sports seats are free from any entry or exit damage; overall, this Z4 belies its years whilst confirming the low (38882) miles and considered ownership.

On the road this Z4 excels, and although the driver aids and infotainment list appears endless, everything we tested operated as it should. Performance is a given but the ride quality offers a sports feel whilst coping with uneven surfaces modern driving must endure … firm but not harsh with excellent feedback. The transmission delivers fuss free ratio changes whatever mode is preferred, equally efficient dealing with commuter traffic or able to ‘push on’ on quiet A roads.
