SoldCountry Classic Cars are saying ‘hello to hybrid’ with the stylish Toyota Yaris Icon Tech VVT-i HEV CVT offered for sale on behalf of a regular client. Registered in November 2018 and having travelled a mere 10392 miles this example is the updated third generation fitted with Toyota’s all new 1497cc petrol unit in an advanced hatchback very much designed around European requirements. A French design team looked to add plenty of ‘chic’ alongside the Japanese reliability, enhanced lines with a wider stance, a look the manufacturer referred to as a ‘dynamic and emotional shape’.
Trim level enjoyed by the Icon Tech is towards the top of dealer listings especially when it features so much up to date equipment. Two tone grey cloth upholstery with lumbar support, 60/40 split folding rear seats and leather steering wheel is complimented by a deluge of safety and driver aids. Blue-tooth, cruise control, front, side and drivers knee airbags, DAB radio, lane departure warning, air con, touch 2 go navigation, USB, 6 speakers, ABS, parking sensors front & back, rear view camera and tyre pressure monitoring to name but a few. Toyota took the Icon trim level then went further adding comfort that is not all about technology as interior space makes this Yaris a market leader, being one of the tallest ‘super-mini’s’ offering max headroom, as this road tester can confirm standing at 6ft 3inches. Luggage is accommodated via 286 litres of trunk space and folding the rear seat extends that to 768 litres.
The 1.5 power plant enjoys electronic variable valve timing and is the first Toyota to benefit from water cooled exhaust manifold, all of which ensures plenty of performance when combined with the electric synergy drive system. 98bhp and 111 Nm of torque propel this hybrid hatch to 62mph in 11.8 seconds and tops out at 103mph. Being a full HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) it can be driven using just electric or a combination of petrol and electric, the large battery being self-charged. Power is transferred via the ultra-smooth CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) perfect around town with a noticeable absence of ratio changes. Manufacturer claims for fuel economy can often be ‘taken with a pinch of salt’ but owners have confirmed 85mpg is easily achievable without driving Miss Daisy; whilst the planet can breathe easier as the CO2 figure of 79 grams per klm is class leading and improved still further courtesy of the CVT unit, keeping occupants free from paying the London Mayor’s congestion charges. With the ability to accelerate away using just the electric motor and continue for a mile or 31mph when the engine cuts in silently ensures the Hybrid version is most at home in town.
The striking finish certainly catches the eye, Ruby Flare Pearl contrasts well with black trim around the windows and the 15-inch black alloy rims. As always, Country Classic Cars are prepared to point out the negatives as well as the plus points of any vehicle, this avoids buyer disappointment at the viewing stage. The rear bumper has a light scuff mark on the outer n/s whilst the tailgate features a small scratch near to the rear screen; both marks have been photographed. Quality tyres offer plenty of life with either Dunlop or Pirelli fitted whilst the images confirm the rims have avoided the usual kerb damage. The interior offers a showroom finish throughout, this example has obviously been cared for and when testing the extensive range of options installed, we found everything operated as it should.
On the road the ride is firm but not harsh with plenty of feedback through the steering, obviously it’s no sportscar although progress can be hurried as required with minimal body roll whilst soaking up the worst surface with ease. This Hybrid’s take off utilising just battery power will surprise many at the traffic light grand prix although some will cast one eye constantly on the efficiency gauge front and centre on the dash binnacle. The needle ranges from ‘charge’ at the lowest output or when braking to ‘economy’ for normal driving through to ‘power’ when both engine and battery are combined for performance. The Continuously Variable Transmission selects much like any other auto box but that is where similarities end and on our test it worked best at lower speeds and operates almost seamlessly with or without the engine assistance enabled, it also features a ‘B’ mode that holds the changes to the lowest gears.
This Toyota Yaris comes with its original book pack containing user guide, dealer list with service and warranty booklet.
